[Yuko Reimei] "Misty Dawn at the Lake" (Akimotoko) Tomio Adachi (Oguni Town, Yamagata Prefecture)
|
[Kacchu Keiba] "Armored Horse Race" (Haramachi City) Ichiro Oshima (Aizuwakamatsu City)
|
|
This photo skillfully captures the scenery of Akimotoko before dawn.
Taking photos of a lake is very difficult.
The photographer gives a broad perspective of the morning mist veiling the red morning sky with a wide-angle lens.
The success of the photo lies in its composition, particularly the way in which the surface of the water was minimized. |
This is the winning photo among many taken at an armored horse race.
It shows the dynamic forms of the dashing horses, their kicks raising a cloud of sand, and the concentration of the jockeys, recreating for the viewer the breathless suspense of the race. |
Fukushima Prefecture had a "Utsukushima Fukushima"("Beautiful Fukushima") photo contest for one year from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995, to reveal "beautiful nature," "a beautiful town," and "beautiful spirit" in photographs.
Over the course of the year, 2,324 entries were received from 600 photographers from 21 prefectures in Japan and one entry from Germany.
1,510 photos were on the theme of "beautiful nature," while 214 dealt with "beautiful town" and 600 had "beautiful spirit" as their subject.
Locations varied: 612 photos were taken in the northern Fukushima, 279 in central Fukushima, and 60 in the southern part of the prefecture.
927 photos came from the Aizu district, 212 from the South Aizu district, 96 from the Soso district, and 138 from the Iwaki district.
We present here some of the best of the 100 winning entries. We hope they capture some of the beauty of Fukushima.

[Yamaai no murabito] "Village People in Ravine" (Atsushiokano Village) Shoichi Hoshi (Shiokawa Town) |
[Seijaku] "Tranquillity" (Onogawako) Takashi Miura (Kawamata Town) |
|
This work warmly illustrates the humanity of beautiful Fukushima, leaving a lasting impression.
We catch a glimpse of daily life, through the disheveled blankets and the boots scattered about.
The photograph's attraction is in its lack of affectation and its capture of the ordinary.
|
This work achieves a stillness reminiscent of a Chinese style landscape.
The contrast is also excellent, bringing the subjects alive.
It is indeed a work of distinctive character.
