Educational system
In the Japanese educational system,compulsory education lasts for nine years(six years of primary school and three years of junior high school),usually followed by three years of senior high school and four years at university. Also available are two-year junior colleges and vocational colleges that offer business training. The school year starts in April and ends in March. The Situation Today
In Fukushima Prefecture,more than 90% of junior high graduates enter senior high schools,and one of four senior high school graduates enters a university or junior collage. These numbers are clear proof of the high level of Fukushima youths' educational interest. Adult members of the population also seek to enrich their knowledge in ways that suit their ages and interests. Today,it is of the greatest importance that schools educate people who can flourish in the present information-oriented society and are comfortable with internationalization. It is also crucial to help each student develop his or her individuality and abilities to their fullest potential. Accordingly,the prefecture is promoting the establishment of additional institutes of higher education as well as schools that meet the needs of the information age,and is inviting instructors of foreign languages from overseas. Educational Facilities
Among the educational facilities located in the prefecture is Fukushima UniversityCa national university with departments of economics,education,and administration and sociology-The university will soon expand its curriculum by adding departments in natural science.The prefecture also boasts a prefectural medical college,one of the few in Japan.
