Mollusc Mania in Matsukawa-ura

Renowned for its superb array of mouthwatering seafood fare, Soma is the perfect destination for the gourmet. Shrimp, fish and shellfish are among the delicacies firmly established on restaurant menus in this coastal district. Seafood lovers not merely content with satiating themselves at one of the many eateries dotted around the coastline will find a trip to the Matsukawa-ura Inlet, located just 15 - 20 minutes away from central Soma, very rewarding. Abundant with clams, the inlet is host every year to the "Soma Matsukawa-ura Inlet Shellfish Hunt" from March to August. Those with a penchant for clam chowder and other such gastronomical delights can gather at the inlet every day at low tide and, armed with a small shovel and bag, dig for clams in the mud to their hearts' content. A fee of 1000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children is payable, and for this, participants can take away two kilogrammes (one kilogramme for children) of their spoils to savour at home. The Shellfish Hunt this year runs until 26 August.
