Fukushima Prefecture is the third largest prefecture in Japan, and is situated in the north eastern region, known as Tohoku. It boasts amazing natural beauty, rich and varied culture, and a fascinating history. It is also conveniently placed to access major cities such as Tokyo and Sendai, and provides a lifestyle to suit everyone's needs - mountains, lakes, rivers, cities, towns, countryside, ski resorts, onsens, and much, much more!

The Region was also greatly affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, ensuing Tsunami and The ongoing Nuclear Disaster at the Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Reactor in the West of the prefecture. Following the accident at the nuclear plant many residents were forced to leave the homes as radiation spread. The clean up after the Tsunami and Earthquake is continuing with great endeavour. Radiation contamination still remains in some areas of the prefecture, with a 20km evacuation zone still in place. The residents of towns within the zones and areas with high levels of radiation contamination are living in temporary housing areas throughout Fukushima and neighbouring prefectures.

Despite the great challenge faced by the people of Fukushima, the International Affairs Division is dedicated to improving Fukushima's relationship with other countries and to providing interesting and entertaining activities for people to learn about the world around them. More recently the focus of the IAD has been facilitating visits from a number of global dignitaries including the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, these visits and activities are vital parts of the revitalization process as they help encourage continued support of Fukushima.
